. . . . . . . Money is important, no doubt about it. But how important? Some studies put the amount of money needed for happiness at about a hundred grand a year.

. . . . . . . But so many people shift the goal lines of monetary need farther to the right. They have half a million. So they want a million. They have a mil. Then they want ten mil. {cont.}

. . . . . . . I think people just like the affirmation that comes from shopping. You hand over something (a card, a bundle of cash) and they gave you something you want back. It’s a thrilling acceptance of one person by another living, breathing person. That’s why the self-payment option at supermarkets and pharmacies are so dry, so drained of meaning. Because you know it’s a lifeless procedure, limp as a grandpa without his Viagra.

. . . . . . . Then there’s kleptomania, which is shopping with nothing in your pocket. There have been famous Hollywood stars who stole when they hardly needed to. Penetrating security systems is a thrill in itself.

. . . . . . . What is the big picture? It’s GDP, Gross National Product. It’s greed writ large.

. . . . . . . Then there’s GPP, Gross Planetary Product. It’s super-greed written super-large.

. . . . . . . Someday there will be GGP Gross Galactic Product, and humans will zoom from world to world, down established trade lanes, and robots will say in their robotic voice, “How — can — I — serve — you?”
